Fun With Food Storage

I follow several blogs and other online resources that focus on food storage and emergency preparedness. Several local Utahn’s launched Fun With Food Storage (FunWithFoodStorage.net) today. The site will provide information about how to get and use your food storage in your everyday cooking. They’re having a great give away contest and I thought I’d pass on the info to our family and friends. Enjoy!

December Daring Baker’s Challenge

It’s time again to reveal what the Daring Baker Challenge was this month!!

This month’s challenge is brought to us by the adventurous Hilda from Saffron and Blueberry and Marion from Il en Faut Peu Pour Etre Heureux.

They have chosen a French Yule Log by Flore from Florilege Gourmand

I have to say that this challenge at first was a little daunting.  I read through it and opened up the word document and it was 14 pages long (it has variations of the 6 different elements)!!  Then I went through and choose what my elements would be at it was 7 pages long.  However, once I started doing each of the seperate elements it wasn’t as scary as I thought it was going to be.  I made the Dacquoise Biscuit (almond), Milk Chocolate Whipped Cream (Chantilly), Cinammon-Milk Ganache Insert, Chocolate Crisp Insert, Chocolate Creme Brulée Insert, and Milk Chocolate Icing.  We actually ending up serving it as desert for our Christmas Eve Dinner at my mom’s house.

November Daring Baker’s Challenge

The challenge this month was a yummy caramel cake with optional caramels.  Now, when the challenge came out I was planning on doing both of them, but when I woke up this morning and realized that it was posting day I knew that both items were not going to get done (who would have thought that 2 young kids and another on the way may prevent me from getting everything done I wanted to this month!!).  So I made the cake.  I was a little intimidated about making the caramel sauce because it talks about wearing long sleeves and having ice water ready for possible burns, but it wasn’t as bad as I had imagined.  I don’t really like cakes, but this one has such a great taste!!

This month there are some new posting rules for the daring bakers so that they can now track which daring bakers are doing the challenges.  So the following information hopefully is everything that they need for the tracking.

Helping Dolores (http://culinarycuriosity.blogspot.com/) host this month are Alex (Brownie of the Blondie and Brownie duo:http://blondieandbrownie.blogspot.com/), Jenny of Foray into Food (http://forayintofood.blogspot.com/). And since none of us know jack about alternative baking, we’ve once again turned to Natalie of Gluten-a-Go-Go (http://glutenagogo.blogspot.com/) to assist us.

Our leading lady this month is Shuna Fish Lydon of Eggbeater (http://eggbeater.typepad.com/) and her signature caramel cake.

October Daring Bakers Challenge

This month’s challenge was a lot of fun.  It was hosted by Rosa (http://www.rosas-yummy-yums.blogspot.com ).  She was supposed to do her hosting with Sherry who suddenly passed away of a heart attack.

“Prior to her sudden death (9 days before), Sher had shared with me her recipe idea for the October challenge that she, Glenna and myself should have hosted together. When she died, it was clear for me that I would respect her choice and that I would still submit her recipe. This is my last ode to a very appreciated blogger, DB member, skilled baker and cook whom I miss a lot!

For this challenge I chose an easy to follow recipe for “Pizza Napoletana” from Peter Reinhart’s “The Bread Baker’s Apprentice” which yields a beautifully tasty, thin, crispy, yet chewy pizza crust.”

It meant a lot to do this recipe.  The focus was on being able to toss the dough, so that’s why there is such a fun picture.  Scott had a hard time getting the picture (this is the best we got.)

September Daring Baker

September Challenge - Lavash Crackers & Toppings

This month we are making Daring Bakers history as our September challenge is vegan and/or gluten free. For the first time ever, the torch has been passed to « Alternative » Daring Bakers : Natalie from Gluten A Go Go, and co-host Shel, of Musings From the Fishbowl. We wanted to make something savory this month, and we chose the recipe for Lavash Crackers from Peter Reinhart’s The Bread Baker’s Apprentice (pp 178 - 180).

After a crazy month I realized that I was supposed to post today.  So I’ve had a crazy day of baking (I bought the stuff to make the toppings at the beginning of the month).  The Lavash was a hit with my boys.  They loved it.  It was a great dough and I’m going to try making pizza with Ben another day this week.

August Daring Bakers Challenge

This month I have started feeling better so I was able to accomplish the Daring Bakers Challenge.  This months challenge was hosted by Tony Tahhan and MeetaK.  The challenge was eclairs from Chocolate Desserts By Pierre Hermé.  It was fun and challenging.  Ben helped me put the chocolate glaze on the top of the eclairs (that’s why they look so fun.)

July Daring Baker Challenge

As Scott mentioned in an earlier post this pregnancy is kicking my butt!  The host for this month was Chris from of Mele Cotte (http://melecotte.blogspot.com/).  The recipe was a cake that looked as though it would be really fun to make.  The problem that I ran into with being so sick (I don’t think I’ve cooked in 6 weeks) is that I’ve never been able to read through the whole recipe without needing to run to the bathroom (you know when you’re pregnant and people start naming off food and it makes you sick to even hear the idea of food?).  Anyway, I didn’t end up being able to make the cake, but I do appreciate the time that Chris took to come up with the challenge and hope to make it in the future when my stomache can handle it :)!

June Daring Baker’s Challenge

This month was my first Daring Baker’s Challenge.  The project was a Danish Braid and was hosted by Kelly of Sass & Veracity, and Ben of What’s Cookin’?.  The recipe is called “Danish Braid” from Sherry Yard’s The Secrets of Baking. The recipe calls for Apple filling, but we could use what we wanted.  I made two: one with strawberry and sweetened cream cheese and the other one with chocolate and sweetened cream cheese. (I actually made them twice because I didn’t like how the first ones looked.)
